Five years.

More days than I want to add up.

When I left, I was instructed to stay away. Don’t look back, my mother said. Only good things lie ahead, and looking back would keep me from achieving everything I wanted out of life.

She was wrong.

The first year was the hardest. Everywhere I turned, I saw him. Everything reminded me of him, of the trip we took together. The time we shared together that summer. The one night that changed the rest of our lives.

Wyatt was my life, and then my parents ripped me from him.

Per my mother’s instructions, I’m to come home for her birthday celebration and then head back to Denver. No detours. No pit stops. No fooling around.

As if I could face him after all this time.

The secrets I’ve kept from him will come to light one day, but it won’t be this weekend. It can’t be. I’m not ready to confess all my sins. Five years may be a long time, but it still feels like too soon, yet too late to ask for forgiveness.

It feels like a lifetime and yet there are moments when it feels like it was only yesterday I stared out of the passenger window of my father’s car, watching as my life was changing before my eyes.

I remember holding my stomach as we drove past Garrett’s, the realization that Wyatt would never know why I left. He would never know that we created a child together. He would never forgive me for keeping his child from him, for denying him the opportunity to be a father.

But I wasn’t denying him, my parents were. At least, that’s what I’ve tried to convince myself of. Every time I look into her eyes, I see him. I see the life we planned for us. And all that convincing fails me.

I should have been stronger.

I should have fought harder.

I’ve had the opportunity to try and make amends, but my fears have held me back.

A low voice, almost a shallow whisper, calls to me and I move toward the mirror. I take one last glimpse at Preston as remorse moves through me. When I became aware, I had no intention of ever letting the shadows take over. Unfortunately, Tezcatlipoca forces the issue.

The voice gets louder as the darkness ebbs and flows, taking shape. The sinister shadow, black as night, steps out of its midst. It surrounds me like a death shroud.

“Come to me,” I say directly to its evil core.

Terrors from another time—one after another—fill my mind. I see the moment I made my request of the Lady of the Dead along with her fated words.

“A girl shall be born bearing your sigil. Find this body and regain your powers and knowledge. When Tezcatlipoca finds it, he will guide you. Only he can unite the soul and the body. But beware, Sin-Eater, he will learn your truth. When he does, your soul will return to Mictlán.”

The shadow slinks back toward the mirror but stops just before breaching the surface. A pair of glowing eyes land on me.

It’s time, Sin-Eater.

I inhale deeply, steadying myself. “Tezcatlipoca, something is wrong.”

His arm wraps around my waist, holding me in place. “It’s nothing to fear, Tlazolteotl. It’s just your memories returning.”

The shadow nods, and its eyes drift toward Tezcatlipoca. Pointing at the mirror, I exclaim, “No. This is worse than any memory I’ve ever had. See for yourself!”

He swears unintelligible words, and his head swings toward the black glass. When he does, smoky tendrils rise from the surface and wrap around him. The Aztec god isn’t strong enough to fight against the beast. Unfortunately, I’m forced to watch the scene playing within the smoking mirror.

Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca were always at war with each other. On that fated night, I created a special brew to intoxicate Quetzalcoatl. Tezcatlipoca had nefarious plans for his brother, but they were cruelly intercepted.

“My lord,” I said as I approached the bare-chested god.

“Drink this and be merry. For there is a young maiden waiting for you in your chambers.”

Quetzalcoatl, always eager for a night of sex, drank cup after cup of the enchanted elixir. When I was certain he was thoroughly intoxicated, I led him into his room.

He lowered his body onto the petlatl and allowed me to undress him.

The plan was for the god to mistakenly commit incest by sleeping with his sister. Tezcatlipoca had the unsuspecting girl drugged so that she would fall asleep in her brother’s chamber.

My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I experienced hearing it from my in-laws. Each time my husband got on the phone to Scotland after five seconds, I could hardly understand a word. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and roadie.

I live in a cabin which is slowly being surrounded by the city and wish I were farther out. My cat and Husky-Collie mix dog are happy in our little slice of heaven called Alaska. In the silence of winter dreams of people and places provide a rich pool of ideas to explore.
